Essay 14- Should teenagers focus on all school subjects-IELTS Tution

Some people believe that teenagers should concentrate on all school subjects. But others believe that teenagers should focus on the subject that they are good at or that they find the most interesting. Discuss both sides and give your opinion

Nowadays, there is great stress on students to perform well, owing to the greater competition and lesser job opportunities. A segment of society, thus, advocates that students should only divert their energies towards their favourite subjects only. However, I personally support the view that all subjects need to be studied properly to pursue higher studies in the desired field.

Undoubtedly, if a student shifts his focus to that subject only which interests him, he would definitely perform well. The appreciation and acknowledgement of performance in that subject would boost his confidence to replicate the same in other subjects as well. A publication in a US journal, for instance, revealed that around 70% of the students who got encouraged by their teachers and peers in a single subject, started performing well in other subjects as well. That is why some people believe that to show good performance in all courses, one needs to start performing well in a course he finds easier or interesting.

However, there are people who believe that young children need to give proper attention to all subjects instead of only one in order to be able to study further. Colleges and universities tend to give admission to high performing students because of the limited seats and a higher number of applicants. Consequently, a student with average marks would not be able to get admission despite getting full marks in a particular subject. Similarly, a student may end up studying a field whose admission’s marks criteria is lower than his desired department’s threshold in which he showed extraordinary performance. Thus, all subjects need to be given enough time to get suitable grades that enable one to secure admission for higher studies in the subject of their choice.

To sum up, although some consider focusing on one subject instead of all to perform well for better grades in one subject may bring better grades in others, I am of the view that young students need to put the effort in all subjects taught in schools to get an opportunity to study their favourite subject at higher level institutes.
