Some people think economic progress is the only way to measure a country’s success, while others think that there are other factors that can be used to measure a country’s success. What are these factors? Which, of all the factors, do you think are the most important?

There are above 200 countries in the world, which are categorized into 3 main categories: developed, developing, and underdeveloped countries, on the basis of progress in different domains. It is believed by some that a country’s success can only be measured by its progress in the economy; however, literacy, in my opinion, is the most significant factor to judge the success of a country in addition to the economy, and also the crime rate as well.

Undoubtedly, economic growth indicators like GDP and per capita income reflect that a country is progressing, but these are not the sole means to determine a nation’s progress. The crime rate of a country reflects how much successful a government and its institutions are. That is to say, if there is an incessant increase in crimes and offenses being reported, it would show that the public is either deprived of jobs or the country lacks resources to feed its people since these are the major factors that drive people to offend the law. In either case, a negative image of the country is projected, indicating that it has not been so successful.

However, the number of educated citizens is the most significant attribute of a developed country. A country with a smaller number of technical staff, managers, scientists, doctors, etc. may not meet the economic goals required to put it on the list of first-world countries. The lower literacy rate also reflects that the youth is either deprived of basic amenities of education or they are forced to do menial jobs to earn their livelihood, and hence could not study. Both of these scenarios can be because the government either lacks funds to establish educational infrastructure or motivate students to get educated through financial support. Nonetheless, the consequent literacy rates are not adequate enough to provide enough professionals in all fields for the country to progress.

To conclude, despite economic indicators being considered by some as the gauge of a country’s development and progress, there are other key factors like crime and literacy rate which determine a jurisdiction’s good performance, of which I believe the latter to be the most crucial factor because it is the educated and skilled people that actually make the country economically strong.
